About Lightspeed Magazine

Lightspeed is an online science fiction and fantasy magazine. In its pages, you will find science fiction—from near-future, sociological soft SF, to far-future, star-spanning hard SF—and fantasy—from epic fantasy, sword-and-sorcery, and contemporary urban tales, to magical realism, science-fantasy, and folktales. No subject is off-limits, and we encourage our writers to take chances with their fiction and push the envelope.

Lightspeed was a finalist for the 2011 Hugo Award, and stories from Lightspeed have been nominated for the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Theodore Sturgeon Award.

Each month at Lightspeed, we bring you a mix of originals and reprints, and featuring a variety of authors—from the bestsellers and award-winners you already know to the best new voices you haven’t heard of yet. When you read Lightspeed, it is our hope that you’ll see where science fiction and fantasy comes from, where it is now, and where it’s going.

Lightspeed also includes feature interviews, fiction podcasts, and Q&As with our authors that go behind-the-scenes of their stories. While Lightspeed originally published only science fiction, in January 2012, we merged with our sister publication, Fantasy Magazine, and we now publish an equal amount of fantasy and science fiction.

Our current publication schedule each month includes four pieces of original fiction and four fiction reprints, along with two feature interviews and an artist gallery showcasing our cover artist. New content (Fiction and Nonfiction) will be posted on the first four Tuesdays of each month. Ebook editions will be available on the 1st of the month.

A 12 month subscription to Lightspeed includes 96 stories (about 480,000 words of fiction), plus assorted nonfiction. That’s almost 5 regular-sized books worth of fiction!

Hi, it would be really nice and comfortable if the files could be sent as attachment to my kindle email address once they’re out.
    Is that planed?

    • Michael says:

D: Yes, we are indeed working on that. I’ll be sure to let you know when we’ve got that feature working. Thanks for asking!

  2. Don says:

I would love to subscribe on my Kindle. I have bought a few issues and the magazine is a great mix of fiction and non-fiction. I don’t like reading on my computer. I hope it will be available soon.

    • Gavin says:

Hi Don, you can read the mobi on your Kindle. We’re working on having it sent directly to reader’s Kindles. At the moment you can download it from the monthly email or from your Weightless account.
      Best,
      Gavin

  3. Bob says:

Any progress on sending directly to a Kindle? I would like to buy a 12 month subscription for my sister for her Kindle and her birthday is next week.

    • Michael says:

I have made some progress! Unfortunately I fear it will not be ready for prime time within a week. :( But I’ll be sure to let you know when it is ready.

  4. MattJ says:

I noticed that I can buy Lightspeed for my Kindle on Amazon, but I cannot subscribe.

  5. al tomsic says:

i want to subscribe but have only a pc running windows 7. What format of the mag do I request???????????????????????

  6. Clayton says:

Okay, you say “once I subscribe an e-mail will be sent to me” — So how do I subscribe? I see no form to fill out. I see a button that says “add to cart” but where is the “checkout” button?

    • Michael says:

Clayton–you subscribe by adding the subscription to your cart, then checking out. The checkout button appears in the upper left part of the website (just below the picture of a shopping cart) after you add something to your cart. Please let us know if you have any more trouble.

  7. Chris b says:

lightspeed always seems to deliver an enjoyable varied choice of stories. Weightless books were great in helping me get a subscription delivered to my iPod (kindle app) so I always have good stuff to read.

  8. Jonathan says:

I don’t want to use anything kindle related.. I’m hoping that I can find an ebook reader/tablet to use one of these days.
laptop / phone are I guess options.. would this work with Overdrive ebook app on my phone? (Its what my local library uses for their ebooks – I had to read “the city & the city” on it because they didn’t have printed edition.

    • Michael says:

A bit of research reveals that the Overdrive app works with EPUB format. Lightspeed does come in EPUB format, so yes, you should be able to use Overdrive to read it on your phone.

  9. Akerbos says:
